Last year, I wrote about 8 ways to alter your life. I shared tips for conquering bigger goals and creating new habits. This year, I am focusing on little things you can do to be present and savor every moment in 2019. These resolutions may be small, but together, they become the way you live and think and how you spend your time. To me, these are things that just make each day a touch sweeter, and the accumulation makes for one happily-lived year:
Think kind thoughts.
This just has to be my #1. Too often, we make little complaints or have negative thoughts about bad drivers, passengers slowing down the security line at the airport, or people bumping into us on a busy street. Getting worked up over other people (who you can’t change) is a waste of energy. It feels so much better to just breathe, and think a kind thought instead. Be a little more understanding, and give them the benefit of the doubt. Then let it go.
Put a little love in your heart.
This is an extension of the one above, but this time, I’m talking about your actions. Do things for other people, whenever you can. Pick up something that a stranger dropped. Buy a coffee (or tea, in my case) for a loved one when they have a big day ahead. Write a note for someone who needs encouragement. Offer to wash the dishes when it’s not your turn.
Celebrate everything.
Those who know me well are probably laughing and thinking, this is so Blythe. I love to decorate and get festive, and find that doing so enhances the holiday or experience. In spring, I keep fresh happy flowers around. In fall, I buy an assortment of pumpkins. At Christmas, I have numerous little trees and hanging lights. And I do all the things: Galentine’s (Valentine’s for gals) get-togethers, garden visits, pumpkin patches, holiday displays, birthday gatherings, champagne toasts. I love to recognize and celebrate each season and occasion with verve.
Keep a plant around.
You don’t need a green thumb, I promise. See my post on ways to liven up your home with green for low-maintenance suggestions. Having something fresh inside brightens rooms and moods.
Read a book. (Read as many as you can.)
Okay, I’ll admit. This was on my post last year. But it’s such a big one! If you don’t read, you’re missing out on opportunities to grow your mind, consider new perspectives, and become a more empathetic person. Embrace self-growth this year, and make time to read.
Make space for you.
You know that feeling of being stretched too thin, or that you’re doing a lot for other people but nothing for yourself? Don’t get to that point by making a conscious effort to say “no” when you really need to. Stay in with a good movie and a bubble bath. Don’t sacrifice your mental and physical health when you’re exhausted. You need those most of all!
Happy New Year to you! Are you making resolutions this year? Do share in the comments!
Love, Bee
