I live alone. I have been living alone since April of 2017, and after countless solo dance parties, Friends marathons, and decorating all-out however I please for the holidays, I can say that it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Here’s why I love it so much and why I think everybody should try it once!
No roommate drama.
There are no awkward silences or encounters, no silent grudges, no tiffs over the A/C temperature. The space is mine, and I can do what I like with it.
Self-reliance.
No one is there when I encounter a bug or when my balcony has been overtaken by wasps (this happened three times, and I dealt with it). No one is there to help me clean, or investigate when I hear a strange sound in the night (usually, it is the ice machine). As my mom would say, this builds character. Dealing with things yourself makes you realize that you are capable and strong.
Independence.
Living alone makes me feel comfortable doing other things alone. If I want to do something and no one is free to do it with me, I do it anyway. See a movie, go to an exhibit, travel to Europe (yep, I did that) – why not? In fact, doing things by myself reminds me that I like who I am, and I enjoy the quality solo time. As they say, the most important relationship you have is with yourself!
Everything is the same when you come home.
Honestly? I am a little bit obsessive about how I keep my space. I like things in a certain place, you know? I cannot say how nice it is that my apartment looks the exact same when I come home as when I left that morning.
More socialization.
Living alone actually encourages me to get out of the house and do things more! Sure, I love some solo time on the couch, but when I want to see people, I am excited to leave and do something…
Quiet.
…and then when I am tired, to come home and recoup without having to talk to anyone. Introverted me loves to be social, but I also need time to recharge by myself.
Freedom & choice.
Essentially, you can do what you want, when you want, without having to worry about anyone else. There is no stepping on toes or walking on eggshells. You can do you.
Will I live alone forever? Probably not. But I have loved this time to grow and to focus on me. (See “Curating a Cozy Fall Living Space” to do as you please in your home this fall.)
What’s your current living situation? Alone, roommate, significant other, kids? How’s it going? Let’s chat in the comments!

I totally get this! I LOVE coming home from a trip and having everything nice and tidy, just how I left it. Also…that couch looks freaking amazing! You’d have to drag me outta that thing!
