This has been a week of heightened emotions and anxiety. The midterm elections had me and many of my loved ones on edge, hopeful, and nervous all at once. And now, the outcomes can be a lot to process. There are so many articles to read, people to celebrate, and disappointments to feel. Whatever you feel, I encourage you to not become all-consumed. Take some time just for you, to not think about the state of things for a moment, but to focus on nurturing yourself. Here are some things I like to do to stay grounded and calm:
1. Get lost in a book.
Oftentimes, I find that the best cure is literature. A little escapism into someone else’s world can do wonders.
2. Listen to music. Play music, if you can.
Music makes me feel so much better. Listen to music that is hopeful, uplifting, or fun. Listen to music that is peaceful and soothing. Better yet, if you can play an instrument, do it. I love to play my guitar and sing when I need to decompress.
3. Make a cup of tea.
Try an herbal blend. Something with lavender, preferably.
4. Sit in a soft blanket with your thoughts.
Be with your emotions. Feel all the things. Let a blanket be a warm hug to comfort you.
5. Take a walk in nature.
This one is my go-to. Walking in nature always makes me feel more connected to myself. Try to walk without headphones and just listen to your surroundings. It can be quite stabilizing.
6. Soak in a bath.
Never underestimate the power of a hot bath on your physical and mental being.
7. Go phone-free.
Take a break from your technology for at least an hour. It’s such a head-clearer.
8. Do a puzzle.
Puzzles can be a perfect distraction. They serve as something else to focus on and problem solve, and keep your mind away from real life for a while.
9. Color.
I love my adult coloring book. I color when I just need to chill and slow my mind down.
10. Play with therapy dough.
I am a little obsessed with my therapy dough. The scent is so lovely. It is perfect to play with when watching Netflix at night. Play-doh isn’t just for kids, guys!
How are you finding calm right now? I would love to hear in the comments.

I’ve never heard of therapy dough! I need some in my life!
This post is soooo good though. So important. I definitely wish I were at home in a cozy blanket with a hot cup of tea doing a puzzle. (And, TBH, probably watching a Hallmark Christmas movie. Ha!)
