If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know that H and I adopted a little beagle mix, Cleo, at the beginning of August. I am a dog person, having grown up with dogs, and have wanted my own dog for a long time. However, I made myself wait – until now. Everyone’s timing for getting a pet is different, but this is how I knew that I was ready for such a commitment:
I cut back my hours at work.
This school year, I went from teaching 40 hours a week to 30 hours (which means I now get off work at 1 pm), so I knew I’d have the time to take care of a furry friend.
I live with my boyfriend.
Having 2 people to care for an animal really helps. H and I have different schedules, which means that Cleo is only alone for about 3-4 hours each day. This was an important factor to me because I personally would not feel good leaving a dog alone all day.
We are settled in Nashville, and happy in our careers.
H bought our condo this year, and we don’t have plans to leave any time soon. Plus, we both love the work we do, and knew we were financially ready. I needed to feel stable, settled, and content before getting a dog.
I’m older, and I like staying in.
I am 28 years old, and I don’t go out much! I really like having cozy nights in with Cleo and don’t care to leave her excessively. I know I wouldn’t have been as responsible an owner if I’d gotten a dog at a younger age.
Having a dog fits my lifestyle.
Before getting Cleo, I already walked every day at the park. I love being outside and taking walks. Now that I have Cleo, walking is so much more fun, and it connects me with other people and dog owners. I love having conversations with new people and watching Cleo make dog friends.
Certain breeds have different needs, of course, but these were all factors for me when it came to deciding that I was ready for a dog! I have been so happy with Cleo – because it was the right time. If you are considering getting a pet, I would encourage you to adopt! We found Cleo at Nashville Humane Association. There are so many loving animals around the city that need forever homes!
