February can be a dreary time of year. Often, many of us start to tire of short, cold winter days and dream of spring. However, I’m in favor of making the most of every time of year. There’s value in slowing down and being content where we are. Here are some ideas for finding enjoyment in the rest of winter by practicing self-care!
Get fresh air
I love taking daily walks. It’s my favorite way to exercise and to clear my mind. I recommend leaving the headphones at home and instead being mindful and present on your walk, taking time to notice the sights and sounds. I have never regretted going for a walk and always feel better afterward.
Try a new activity
Sometimes, we get into a rut in the winter because it’s too cold to get out and do much, so we stay home and end up doing the same things day after day (especially now, during a pandemic). Life gets interesting when we try new things, so try something new in your own home. There are plenty of online classes and YouTube tutorials to teach yourself a new skill. Here are some ways to get creative during the winter.
Or revisit something you used to love doing
Is there an activity you used to love, but it’s been a while since you’ve done it? Perhaps you used to play piano but haven’t done so for years, or maybe you took art classes in school but haven’t created anything in a long time. It feels good to do something again that you love!
Embrace the cozy
Since it is so cold, create your perfect cozy atmosphere. Get some soft blankets, pillows, comforting candles, and pretty mugs. Put on something comfy and have a cozy afternoon of simply reading a good book and sipping tea.
Unplug
It can be easy to spend too much time online when we’re stuck inside. If you’re finding it difficult to engage in a creative or meaningful activity, put your phone in another room so that you can focus. You’ll feel better after reading or coloring for an hour than being on your phone mindlessly scrolling for an hour.
Take care of your skin
Who else has super dry skin in the winter? Make sure to moisturize daily so you aren’t bothered by irritated skin.
Dream of spring, too!
While I think it’s important to strive for contentment and to be in the moment, dreaming of spring can be helpful on extra dreary days. You might start your spring cleaning early, decorate for spring, or buy yourself fresh flowers. It might just make things feel a little brighter inside.
