We all have stretches of personal or work stress, and I know right now that many of us are going through one. For me and many other teachers, the beginning of the school year is often the hardest, most exhausting time, and this year it is accentuated by the fact that we are navigating it, once again, during the pandemic. When we face periods of high stress, self-care becomes all the more important. Here are 5 ways to find calm when we need it most.
Breathe
A regular meditation or yoga practice can help us remember breathing techniques to calm ourselves in the moment. There are many wonderful tools and resources out there. I have enjoyed Yoga with Adriene for many years – it’s wonderful free yoga for everyone (also try Alternate Nostril Breathing, which helps me) – and I often feel better after doing meditation exercises on my Fitbit app. In the past, I have used the Simple Habit app as well.
Walk in Nature
I take walks every day outside, and my walks always soothe me, energize me, and give me peace. They are just so good for the mind and body. Nature is healing. I recommend walking without headphones so that you can focus on the sounds, sights, and sensations around you.
Do a Calming Activity
Listen to music that soothes and engage in a calming activity, like coloring. I have this travel-sized coloring book and compact colored pencil set that can be taken on-the-go. When we pair an absorbing activity like this with some lovely music, it can help guide us into a pleasant trance where we forget our worries for a while.
Watch Something Comforting
Watching a favorite feel-good show can be the perfect distraction. Mine is always Friends.
Establish Technology Boundaries
Creating limits with our phones and e-mail can greatly reduce our stress levels. It isn’t healthy for our minds to be checking in on things all the time. Set a time each night to put it all away.
I hope these tips help! How do you like to find calm?
P.S. Creating a spa day at home, why I journal every night, and reconnecting with yourself.
