Natural elements can breathe so much life into a home. I recently picked up a bundle of greenery from the grocery and arranged it on our mantel. The bunch included western red cedar, Douglas fir, eastern white pine, and slash pine branches. I played with placing the different pieces through the artificial garland above the fireplace. After much styling and tweaking, I finally achieved the effect I had in mind – a full, lush bed of winter green, with string lights embedded. I love the woodsy look and festive fragrance.
Then on Saturday, my mom and I took a Live Greenery Workshop at Cheekwood. We made our own wreaths by gathering bundles of cypress, juniper, pine, fir, eucalyptus, and more. We wrapped each one with floral wire and then secured it to the frame, and finally added details like pinecones. It was a fun, festive experience, and rewarding as well; I love taking creative classes and learning a new skill. When I got home, I placed my newly made wreath on the front door.
What a joy to bring the live winter elements home. These experiences have made me interested in including more fresh decor in my home each season. It’s more environmentally-friendly than using plastic decorations, can provide a lovely scent, and is sure to be special year-to-year. However, natural items often make more of a mess and don’t last as long. Perhaps I’ll continue to use the seasonal decor I have but incorporate fresh details in the future as well. What do you think? Do you have more of the faux or real in your home for the holidays?
