I am back with another Book Thoughts post, here to share a few books I’ve read and enjoyed over the past few months!
Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty
I loved this book – It’s a bit long, but I enjoyed getting to know the characters and trying to solve the mystery! This novel is about a tennis family (four grown children and their parents, Joy and Stan Delaney) and the mystery of their mother’s disappearance, which occurs not long after a mysterious woman named Savannah knocks on the Delaneys’ door in need of help and ends up staying with them a while. The story moves between past and present as we piece together the clues, and we get to read the perspective of nearly every character in the book. It’s both a witty and serious read that examines love, betrayal, lies, family, and illusions.
Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson
This is an interesting, short book about a family joined by a teenage pregnancy and their hopes, dreams, desires, loves, and losses. It reads like a series of snapshots showing their significant moments in time. It’s a poetic and powerful story.
The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss
A charming and lovely December read, save this one for the holiday season! Set in a small fictional town in England, this book is very British and cozy, filled with lots of snow and Christmasy things. I loved the main character Kate, a designer and baker. The book is full of her adventures and misadventures and is truly just a delight to read. And since it’s a romance, you know you’re in for a happy ending.
Still Life by Sarah Winman
“But still life in all its beauty and complexity.” I cannot remember the last time a book took me this long to read. It’s been since the beginning of January! If you are looking for a page turner, this is not it. However, if you have a bit of patience, and a love of literature or art, this is a beautiful and poetic story. It follows a group of people (and a parrot – all with endearing quirks and traits) who are like family to one another and find a new life together in Italy. There’s humor, joy, loss, and love – historical events interwoven with deep, tender moments of humanity. It’s an unusual and special book.
