The new year presents a great time to take stock of what you own and declutter. I love to regularly declutter spaces in our home; it always makes me feel much more at ease. This process can feel overwhelming, so I am organizing it into bite-sized tasks that can be done daily, several times a week, or weekly all winter long. You might pick a day(s) and time, and try to stick to it – put it in your calendar, and offer yourself a reward as you complete each one. This list demonstrates what I plan on tackling this season, but these tasks might differ based on your home, so adapt it as needed. Enjoy, and reap the benefits of a clean home and calm mind for the new year!
- Bathroom items & toiletries
- Cleaning supplies
- Clothes & accessories
- Outerwear
- Tops
- Bottoms
- Underwear/sock drawer
- Dresses
- Shoes
- Winter wear (hats, gloves)
- Summer wear (swimsuits, cover-ups)
- Jewelry
- Bags & purses
- Kitchen
- Dishes
- Towels/napkins
- Cookware
- Pantry
- Refrigerator/freezer
- Laundry room
- Utility closet/drawer
- Seasonal decor
- Bookshelves
- Gardening supplies / plants
- Pet items
- Blankets & pillows
- Bedside table
Above are 25 potential tasks – if started tomorrow and completed daily, it would be done by February 3. Twice per week would ensure completion by the end of March.
I also simplified this list and made a downloadable design available on my Etsy shop – I hope it helps inspire you this winter!
Recently, I have made a habit of regularly culling through my belongings, which I recommend – it makes each decluttering session much less overwhelming and more manageable by simply donating a few items at a time. It’s helpful to be extra intentional about future purchases to ensure that things don’t become unnecessarily cluttered again.
When deciding what to donate or keep, I often consider whether something brings me joy or a feeling of indifference, and whether it is still useful or no longer serves me. In my habit of regular culling, there are times when I might notice a singular item or two that I do not need, and go ahead and donate it, or perhaps an expired item that I toss right away. When I go to paint my nails, I might look over all my polishes to see if any bottles need to go. Bite-sized, regular decluttering can keep things feeling tidy without becoming overwhelming. Doing this monthly – say, on the first of each month – can be a good place to start.
I hope to start on my list this week, with ongoing maintenance. I hope you feel encouraged, too, to take stock of what you own and feel at peace in your home this year.
Do you plan to declutter / organize this season?
P.S. How I organized our small pantry space, how I keep my drawers organized, laundry and utility closet organization, master closet clean-out, and working towards a home that sparks joy.
EDIT: I have since closed my Etsy shop and decided to just focus on my blog, which is my biggest passion! Thank you for your support.
