I just returned from my annual trip to Rhode Island with my family – my favorite time in the place I find most beautiful and relaxing, and simply idyllic. Before I was born, my grandmother built a gray-shingled house on a dirt road on the coast, in a tiny town that no one has heard of (which suits us; it is a special place that we would like to keep preserved), where I have spent most every July of my life. The nature there is wild and free, with lots of green grass, wildflowers, trees, and farmland; it is so quiet, just the sounds of birds in the morning, tree frogs to hum us to sleep, the salty breeze and the ocean down the road. We eat fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms. We soak up the sparkling sun on the beach with its sand dunes, beach roses, and rocks out in the middle of the Atlantic that you can climb. It is the most special place to me – it both soothes and rejuvenates, and is always so hard to leave!
Every year in Rhode Island is different – this year there was more fog and haze than usual (haze from the Canadian wildfires). But we did have some classic New England days, in which you wake up to clear, blue sky, and the sun shines warm, and everything is vibrant and lovely. I love taking photos of Rhode Island with my camera; I tend to snap the same photos every year, but can’t help it as the scenery always looks slightly different in some way – and capturing its beauty fills me with joy. Here are my 2023 photo highlights, and I hope they bring you a sense of peace. Perhaps they’ll even inspire you to book a summer trip to New England – the weather and temperatures truly cannot be beat this time of year.
July 4 – our first night
July 8 – dreamy beach weather
July 11 – bright, clear day
July 12 – sunset
July 16 – finished my annual puzzle
July 17 – post-beach house photos
July 20 – last day & most perfect day
post-beach outdoor showers
I treasure these sweet, fleeting summer days and will be dreaming of them until next July.
P.S. Rhode Island scenes from 2022 and 2021, and 3 New England day trips.
