The past week has been a lovely celebration of Easter, my birthday on the 4th, and spring. There’s been flowers, treats, and so much beauty. I’m sharing these with you in hopes of inspiring your own spring enjoyment in the little things.
Easter Goodies
On Good Friday, I went to Trader Joe’s looking for flowers. I found these lovely purple tulips and delicate daisies, and they made the perfect whimsical bouquet for the weekend.
That afternoon, I received a delivery from Homemade by Holly of her gluten-friendly sourdough boule! I sliced it up, and it was so light and delicious.
The First Gardening in Our New Home
We have a little garden plot in our backyard that was here when we moved in, and I wasn’t sure what I would plant – until I spotted hydrangeas at Trader Joe’s when I was there on Good Friday looking for flowers. The first hydrangea I bought was the tiny one. I loved it so much that I went back the next day looking for more, and found larger bushes instead. I purchased three in pink, blue, and purple, and planted them. H bought me some acid-loving fertilizer for them as well as fresh mulch. I have never cared for hydrangeas and hope they do well; if you have any tips, please let me know in the comments.
While I was planting the hydrangeas, H was preparing our newly created plot in the backyard for vegetable and wildflower seeds. This is new for us as well; we are hoping to grow some delicious and beautiful things this spring and summer.
My Birthday
I turned 33 this past Thursday and took the day off work to do simple and fun spring things, and simply enjoy the day. It was a bit cool, but still beautiful with a mix of clouds and sun. I loved the morning so much, opening up the blinds to the view of our dogwood while I sipped my tea.
That morning, my mom and I went to Green Door Gourmet, one of my favorite places where I love to shop their market and spring flowers (available this weekend). In a delightful surprise, my birthday was the very first day for their strawberries. I was so excited to see them bring out the first of the season. Every year, I look forward to Green Door Gourmet’s homegrown strawberries; they are always so juicy, red, and delicious. What a treat.
After a fresh lunch thanks to my market finds, we walked at Percy Warner Park, my favorite place, and soaked up the warm bursts of sun and nearby cherry blossoms on Belle Meade Boulevard.
After the walk, my mom and I went to Cheekwood’s Spring Tea, which they made gluten-free for me. A relaxing, leisurely, and truly delicious time, we sipped teas – cherry green for me, and hibiscus blueberry for my mom – and snacked on the bites – an assortment of small sandwiches (our favorite being the chickpea salad), strawberries with clotted cream, and brownies and meringue. We ate every bite. It was just the loveliest.
We strolled Cheekwood’s gardens on our way back to the car. The tulips bloomed early this year, so there weren’t many left, but we still loved seeing the spring flowers that were left.
That evening, I loved having a low-key birthday dinner with my parents and husband, complete with sparkling rosé, fresh roasted asparagus we’d found at Green Door Gourmet, and a fun, sweet and fluffy cake. It was the perfect birthday for me.
What a joyful week this was; this season just brings so much delight. I hope you are finding your own sweet spring moments as well.
