Over Easter weekend, H and I began planting in our garden beds. Then last weekend, I planted flowers in our front porch pots, and yesterday, I did the back patio pots. Planting flowers and tending to gardens is one of my favorite things about spring; I loved doing so on a smaller scale in our townhouse, and now that we have a house and yard, having the opportunity to do more feels wonderful. It will be a learning experience as this is our first time with our own yard, but that makes it more exciting.
Front Porch Pots
We have a locally grown farm stand near our house, which is just a dream, so I chose to buy all of my plants from them this year. For our pots out front, I planted a geranium and two vinca flowers in each.
Our blooming dogwoods have made the front yard particularly beautiful this month.
Back Patio Pots
On this side of the patio, I planted (from left to right) geranium, lantana, and vinca.
On this side, I planted (from left to right) lantana, calibrachoa, geranium, and two dahlias.
On the patio table, I planted another calibrachoa.
This patio gets tons of sun from the morning to mid-afternoon (when I took these photos!), so I hope these sun-loving plants thrive. Here’s the total round-up of everything I got from our plant stand:
- Five vincas
- Four geraniums
- Two lantanas
- Two calibrachoas
- Two dahlias
Also, a little update on our garden beds – the vegetable and wildflower garden has many sprouts, and we are so excited to see them continue to grow. As for my hydrangeas, one is hanging in there, but the other three were not doing well. A gardener friend suggested I probably planted them too early and that I should cut them down (which I did), but said they should come back next year. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, I sprinkled more of our wildflower seeds into those garden beds surrounding our patio. Hopefully we have something growing there this summer!
By the way, now is the time to repot any houseplants that may need it. I repotted a few last weekend, going up a size in the pot they had been outgrowing.
Are you doing any gardening this spring?
P.S. 10 ways to be well this spring and the first time I gardened on my own.
