My mom and I took a floral arranging class this past week, hosted by Reed Smythe & Company, a beautiful home and garden shop in Nashville with artisan-made goods. After shopping and mingling, we gathered around our glass-blown vases to arrange flowers from Import Flowers, led by Keith Smythe Meacham. We sipped, munched on snacks, and chatted with new acquaintances as we picked our blooms.

The flower choices included roses, tulips, strawflowers, sweet peas, mimosa flowers, Lenten roses, and more. Keith showed our group how to create height, depth, and interest; she demonstrated how to group colors that complement, told us that she generally works in odd numbers, and encouraged us to experiment with our flower placement. We used floral tape on the shallow vases to help hold the flowers in place; I then attempted to create a flowing and whimsical arrangement.

I left feeling very happy with my bouquet!

A few days later, I’ve removed some of the drooping flowers, but what remains is so colorful and lovely. I learned that you do not need to be a professional to make a beautiful bouquet; as long as you like your creation, it’s sure to bring joy to your home. I plan to visit Import Flowers and continue to experiment with homemade bouquets throughout the year.
