I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant, and a few weeks ago when I got home from Rhode Island, my husband and I started working on the nursery. I had dreamed of a soothing design in shades of blue-green, and after doing much research, had my vision. Before our vacation, I picked out paint colors at Sherwin-Williams – plus a stencil design to attempt! As a plant lover, vines felt like the perfect choice. This was going to be much more affordable than wallpaper, so we decided to give it a go.

First, Harrison painted the walls Window Pane, a calming blue-green pastel, as well as the beadboard in Alabaster. I chose Halcyon Green for the design.
The stencil arrived as a large plastic square. We started in the corner of one wall, placing it carefully and securing it in place with painters tape, and used a roller to paint the design on the wall. Then we carefully removed the stencil and lined it up with the painted design for the next section. We repeated until we had completed every wall!

The challenging bits were corners, the shorter walls, slanted walls, and areas close to the ceiling, in which we only needed part of the stencil. We just lined it up as best we could (many times, I would hold the stencil in place in addition to the tape, and H would roll). It was often imperfect, and at times a little frustrating, but overall went quite well. The last step was going over each wall with a small paintbrush in order to fix some of the mistakes. We are so pleased with how it turned out! My vision truly came to life, and I have my dream nursery walls.

Neither of us are sure we’ll stencil again, but it was worth all the work for this beautiful turnout! It would definitely be an easier project with walls that are even, with no slanted ceilings. I will share more of this room – and the walls – once we have the nursery set up!
Have you ever painted with a stencil?
P.S. More home projects – our master closet renovation, organizing a small pantry space, and master bath renovation.
