Today, I am six weeks postpartum. We have gotten into a groove at home. Of course, with a newborn, things can be unpredictable, but we have a good schedule and system in place (this book has been a helpful guide). Over the past six weeks, we have been sharing baby duties and becoming more comfortable and knowledgeable caring for our little one. The sleep deprivation comes and goes, but we know it will continue getting easier in time.
My recovery has been a bit slow due to a tough birth, so while many women are cleared for normal activities at their six week postpartum visit, I have a bit to go. Although my pain has lessened, I am having surgery again soon for some stitches that came apart post-birth, and after that, four more weeks (hopefully) of recovery. I am really looking forward to being past that. Thankfully, I have been able to take walks which has been so great for my mental health. I am dreaming of going to yoga classes again, sitting comfortably, and feeling fully myself!
For now… we have a potential winter storm we are watching this weekend that’s making things feel a little more stressful at the moment – the uncertainty of my surgery (supposed to be next week, might have to postpone), and the potential for heavy ice/snow, losing power, or being stuck inside for days on end, all with a newborn baby. If you are facing winter weather as well, I am hoping we all can stay safe and warm through this next week. I will be dreaming of no ice and just a pretty snow.
Some things I find helpful during cold winter days include puzzles, coloring, reading, watching a comforting show, knitting, and getting out for a brisk walk. What about you? I have been doing some of these activities during this postpartum period and plan on delving into more with the upcoming freezing temperatures. Plus, of course, snuggling with our little one, and hoping for some good stretches of sleep.
Postpartum life definitely has ups and downs, especially in the wintertime, but I am focused on staying cozy, moving my body (which just means walking right now until I have fully recovered), eating healthily, resting, and giving lots of grace.
Whether you are also currently navigating postpartum life and/or this cold winter, or another period of change, please take gentle care! Xo
P.S. What has helped me through this beginning of motherhood and our birth story.
