I decorate for every season, including the one that often gets overlooked: winter. How many of us mope from the time the holidays end until spring comes again? I have been guilty of this in the past, but now, I embrace, and I savor. Maybe it’s just the poet in me, but I have come to appreciate these short, cold days for what they are – quiet, reflective, and cozy.
Still, it’s difficult to transition from holiday bliss back to a work-filled routine. And there’s one thing many of us dread: taking down the Christmas decorations. It’s a task that can just be plain miserable, leaving our homes empty and somber.
And so, I decided to transition our white and gold festive decor to green and wintry. Instead of only removing decorations, I decorated again. I even left a few Christmas items out, because really, what is January if not white with snow and green with pine trees? (Well, we don’t get much snow in Nashville, but a girl can dream.) Here is our home this month:
The Kitchen

I love switching out kitchen towels for different seasons and holidays. It’s one of the easiest ways to celebrate a new time of year. I snagged these from Crate & Barrel.
The Dining Table

I also really enjoy changing up placemats and centerpieces throughout the year! I wanted to go clean and white for January, so I kept this bottle brush tree out from Christmas and added my Snow Flakes & Icicles candle (similar here) that I found at Anthropologie a few years back. I also traded out the festive gold placemats for white ones.
The Reading Nook Couch

Again, I wanted this space simple and neutral. I did display this little card that I found in Jackson Hole at the General Store in Teton Village! It reminds me of the special, snowy trip we just had.
The Living Room

I’m especially loving our living room right now. For December, everything was primarily gold. I kept up the string lights because to me, they’re just cozy, and I wanted this room to remain that way for winter. I also left a small flocked tree from Christmas because to me, it’s wintry and can be used beyond the holiday season. Notice, too, the Gray Malin Double-Sided Snow Puzzle (that we still need to do!).
I switched out the gold pillow covers for these white pom-pom ones and this emerald green one for a pop of color that reminds me of a winter forest – and they are so soft! I also placed two new blankets on the couch that were gifts. Although these have red in them (patterned sherpa fleece throw; Barefoot Dreams throw) and make the room look a little more Christmasy, they’re absurdly plush and comfy, and I can’t resist using them while it’s still cold outside.
The Mantel

Our mantel went from bright and sparkly to fresh and green. I found these little winter trees in the Target dollar section a few years ago, so they were very inexpensive. For some reason, I love them! I also displayed my favorite winter candle and a pretty ornament I found in Jackson Hole.
These simple changes have made my January a lot cheerier. Just sitting in my living room now, writing this blog post, I feel content in this space. What does your home look like right now?
P.S. Have a January refresh.
