Snow days in January feel so special. Having a surprise day to stay at home and just be, after returning to work from the holidays, is a lovely gift.
We had been anticipating the snow day all week, and it was announced on Thursday afternoon that school would be out on Friday. I awoke Friday to the snow gently falling with a layer already on the ground.
We took Cleo on a snowy walk around the neighborhood in the morning, and then settled in for a peaceful afternoon and evening at home.
The snow picked up throughout the day, falling most steadily and heavily in the first hours of the afternoon, which I first watched out the kitchen windows as I ate soup for lunch.
I then made a cup of hot cocoa and curled up on the couch to simply watch the falling white.
On Friday evening, as the snow continued to fall, I stepped outside to snap this photo of our home and Christmas lights – which I’ve kept up in anticipation of how pretty they would be in snowy weather. Plus, I do wish we all left our white string lights in January as winter lights, since they so brighten up the season.
Over this snowy weekend, I worked to complete a puzzle that I’d gotten for Christmas, and finished it Saturday evening. This is my favorite puzzle brand; they’re high-quality, bright and colorful, and challenging enough while still being very doable.
If you get to experience a snow day this winter, I hope you can spend it exactly as you please – whether playing outside, sipping cocoa by the fire, watching a comforting movie, reading a cozy book, or perhaps doing a puzzle. Please be gentle with yourself this winter, and remember that winter does lend itself to quieter pursuits; there is no rush or pressure in this season (or any season).
While I feel grateful to have enjoyed this snow, my heart goes out to everyone affected by the wildfires in LA. There are numerous resources out there if you are looking to support efforts in the area; I am sharing some from Yoga with Adriene. Sending love and comfort to you all.
